How to Keep your Upholstery Cleaner Longer

There is nothing better than lounging on your couch and spending time with family, unless it’s dirty and covered in stains.  Here are some professional tips to keep your upholstery cleaner longer so you can enjoy your sofas and chairs for many years to come!

Regular Vacuuming 

About once a week, get a handheld vacuum or use your vacuum attachment to lightly clean your sofas and chairs. Vacuum under the cushions and reach in the crevices where the crumbs, items, and particles tend to fall. You can also use a lint roller to grab the pet hair the vacuum missed.

Occasional attention

The cushions on your couch can use occasional fluffing every few weeks to spread out the filling.  Flip and rotate the cushions over every month or so.

Pre-treating

Adding ScotchGuard to your fabric furniture is like adding an invisible plastic guard.  This pre-treatment seeps into the upholstery and prevents dirt and oils from getting into the fabric.

Block out the Sun

The rays from the sun can continually damage the upholstery daily. Covering your windows with blinds or drapery will extend the life of your furniture and carpet.

Proper Stain Removal

When you buy your furniture, read the tags to find out how to remove stains.  Tip: Don’t remove the tags because you may forget the instructions later.  Most tags contain the following codes for cleaning:

  • WS: Use a mild detergent with a steam vacuum or a dry cleaning detergent
  • S: Use a dry cleaner detergent only
  • X: Use a vacuum only. No water
  • W: You can use water to clean it

For most fabrics, you can use a clean rag and simple clear dish soap (Dawn) then blot the stain instead of wiping. Let dry before trying again. It may take a few passes to remove the stain.

Clean Window Tracks by adding baking soda into the dirtiest areas, then pour some vinegar. Let sit about 10 minutes. Scrub with a toothbrush and wipe off!

Get Rid of Soap Scum with halved grapefruit and salt. Scrub.

Dust hard to reach places by attaching microfiber cloths around a broom with a rubber band.

Keep Toilet Brush fresh by pouring a bit of Pine-Sol to the bottom of the holder.

Remove hard water deposits from shower head pouring distilled white vinegar into plastic bag then cover shower head with bag by securing it with a rubber band.  Let it soak at least a couple hours, then wipe away deposits.

Deep Clean your mattress with baking soda, essential oil and a vacuum.  Add 2-3 drops of your favorite essential oil to baking soda then sprinkle on mattress and let sit for at least an hour.  Vacuum thoroughly.

Clean Oven Glass using baking soda and water. Let sit and then scrub.

Clean floor vent covers by adding them into the dishwasher for a cycle.

Disinfect sponge by adding to microwave for 30 seconds.

Shine your stainless steel with a soft cloth and some rubbing alcohol.

Clean cloudy glasses with vinegar and a paper towel.

Restorative vs Low Moisture Carpet Cleaning

At Pure Cleaning, we provide customized care to get your carpets as clean as possible. During the inspection process, we will analyze the construction of the carpet, the soiled areas, and the condition of the carpet.  After the inspection, we create your customized cleaning plan and decide whether you need our Restorative Cleaning method or Low Moisture Cleaning method.  Many people ask us, what is the difference between your Restorative carpet cleaning and the Low Moisture carpet cleaning?  Let us break it down for you.

 

Our Restorative Carpet Cleaning (hot water extraction) begins with a dry soil removal using counter rotating brushes that loosens up the soil from the fibers in a gentle way before pre spraying. Then we will pre-spray and go over with our brush machine again to agitate the cleaning solution. Next, we begin hot water extracting using machinery that rotates and has the capability of going through more passes over the carpet than a regular wand. Using these machines allow us to use lower pressure which leaves your carpet less wet and insures that we pull out all of the soil. When we finish hot water extracting, we begin our bonnet cleaning that helps absorb any more soil and moisture. We place air movers to speed up the drying process and we finish off with grooming the carpet at the end.

 

Low moisture carpet cleaning is a basic maintenance cleaning to reduce traffic patterns, stains, and more.  Low moisture means we will remove the soil and particles from carpet so there is less friction to improve life of your carpet.  First, we remove particles and free dirt from the carpet area.   Then, we spray a safe cleaner (environmentally safe too) on the carpet which crystallizes and locks into the fibers.  Lastly, we clean it up with our brush pro system.  This is a quick service and is suggested every 2-3 months.

The time has come to take down the lights and clear out the pine needles that have been littering your living room floor for the last month. While some people wish Christmas could stay all year, the rest of us are ready to take a break from the holiday music and festivities – which means cleaning and storing all those seasonal decorations. Here’s a few tips to help you clean up quickly and save some hassle for the next holiday season.

Give Everything a Place

Decorations can be delicate, so you shouldn’t leave anything up to chance. For glass ornaments, there are dozens of options that let you compartmentalize and give everything a safe place. For the lights, we recommend using a storage reel or bag that keeps them safe and tangle free. There are even bags for artificial Christmas trees that let you safely store and extend the life of your beloved tree.

When everything has a place, the likelihood of accidents happening (or losing something!) are minimized. The added bonus is that everything is much easier to unpack when organized properly.

Use Durable Storage

It might be tempting to reuse all of those Amazon boxes the presents came in, but cardboard and other less-durable options aren’t the best way to store things for the year. For one, you risk exposing your decorations to the conditions of your storage space (like heat, cold, and especially moisture!). More importantly, cardboard can pose a significant fire hazard if it’s sitting in your attic or storage year round. If you’re looking to extend the life of your decorations, consider investing in a sturdy bin or canvas bag instead.

Designate a Storage Space

Save time and hassle by making sure that your holiday decorations are kept separate from everything else you have stored away. Whether that’s a special corner in your attic or a specific shelf in your basement, keeping everything in one place will help you expedite getting Christmas set up for next year.

If you have an artificial tree, you also need to make sure your storage area stays between 40 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Most trees won’t do well outside of those temperatures, and you certainly don’t want to have to buy a new artificial tree every year!

Take Time to Label

It may sound time consuming, but packing up the decorations by room and then labeling according to where you display everything can be a huge timesaver for the next holiday season. It’s a great way to minimize the stress of trying to remember where you put certain decorations.

Bonus tip: Take pictures of everything for reference, especially if you like a certain arrangement!
